I. Lý thuyết về phrasal verb

1. Phrasal verb là gì?

Phrasal verb là cụm từ gồm động từ kết hợp với một hoặc hai phụ tố (thường là trạng từ hoặc giới từ). Khi các từ này kết hợp với nhau, chúng tạo thành một đơn vị ý nghĩa mới, thường có nghĩa khác hoặc bổ sung ý nghĩa cho từng thành phần riêng lẻ.

Take off: Cởi (quần áo), cất cánh (máy bay)

• She took off her coat and hung it on the hook. (Cô cởi áo khoác và treo nó lên móc.)
• The plane took off smoothly from the runway. (Máy bay cất cánh êm ái từ đường băng.)

Look up: Tra cứu

• Can you look up the meaning of this word in the dictionary? (Bạn có thể tra nghĩa của từ này trong từ điển được không?
• I often look up new recipes online. (Tôi thường tra cứu các công thức nấu ăn mới trên mạng.)

Put on: Mặc (quần áo), đeo (vật trang sức)

• Don’t forget to put on your jacket before going outside. (Đừng quên mặc áo khoác trước khi ra ngoài.)
• She put on her glasses to read the small print. (Cô đeo kính vào để đọc dòng chữ nhỏ.)

Turn off: Tắt (đèn, thiết bị)

• Please turn off the lights when you leave the room. (Vui lòng tắt đèn khi bạn rời khỏi phòng.)
• Jack turned off the TV and went to bed. (Jack tắt TV và đi ngủ.)

2. Cấu tạo của phrasal verb

Cấu trúc phrasal verb bao gồm:

• Động từ cố định (verb): là yếu tố chính của cụm phrasal verb. Các động từ thường gặp là: get, put, take, look, call, turn, run, give, come, go,…
• Phụ tố: có thể là trạng từ hoặc giới từ. Một số phụ tố phổ biến: on/off, up, down, out, in, away, back, up, over,…. Phụ tố có thể ghép liền hoặc tách rời với động từ. Vị trí của phụ tố:

• Trước động từ: look out, run off, turn down…
• Sau động từ: get up, put on, take off, come back…

3. Cách dùng phrasal verb trong tiếng Anh

Cũng giống như động từ thường, Phrasal Verb có thể đóng hai vai trò:

• Nội động từ
• Ngoại động từ

Transitive phrasal verb (động từ ngoại): Đây là loại phrasal verb yêu cầu một tân ngữ (object) sau động từ. Ex: 

• Turn off the lights. (Tắt đèn.)
• She put on her coat. (Cô ấy mặc áo khoác.)

Intransitive phrasal verb (động từ không ngoại): Đây là loại phrasal verb không yêu cầu tân ngữ sau động từ. Ex: 

• The dog ran away. (Con chó chạy trốn.)
• They laughed at the joke. (Họ cười với cái đùa.)
